What is Cover Art?
In all types of media production, cover art uses color, typography, photos, illustrations, graphics, visual effects, and text to:
• Hook the target audience
• Communicate the mood and tone of the production
• Establish brand, lay the foundation for brand recognition and audience following
• Spark inquiry and wonder; raise questions that the production will analyze or discuss
• Form building blocks for other digital productions, printed materials, and merchandise
Project Considerations
Each of the components of a production requires specialized cover art. You might choose to make a detailed cover for the documentary production, but you might also consider prototyping several covers and related artifacts for the various components of your DT&L Project, including the website, a podcast, social media avatars, and more. A cover art "suite" would make a memorable addition to your professional portfolio.
